Asbestos Abatement

Safe, certified removal of asbestos-containing materials — fully compliant with EPA and Maryland state regulations.

Overview

What Is Asbestos Abatement?

Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are present in millions of commercial and residential buildings constructed before 1980. Disturbing them without proper containment releases microscopic fibers that cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. IG Services provides licensed asbestos abatement services in full compliance with EPA NESHAP regulations and Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) requirements — protecting occupants, workers, and the surrounding community.

How It Works

Our Process

1

Inspection & Sampling

A licensed inspector collects bulk samples from suspect materials. Lab analysis confirms the presence and type of asbestos.

2

Abatement Plan & Permits

We prepare a site-specific abatement plan, file required MDE notifications, and obtain all necessary permits before work begins.

3

Containment Setup

The work area is sealed with poly sheeting and placed under negative air pressure using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to prevent fiber migration.

4

Removal

Licensed abatement workers in full PPE remove ACMs using wet methods to suppress fiber release. All materials are double-bagged and labeled.

5

Waste Disposal

Asbestos waste is transported to a licensed disposal facility in compliance with EPA and DOT regulations.

6

Clearance Testing

An independent industrial hygienist conducts final air clearance testing. We don't release the area until it passes.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my building has asbestos?

Buildings constructed before 1980 are most likely to contain ACMs. The only way to confirm is bulk sampling by a licensed inspector — visual identification is not reliable.

Is asbestos dangerous if it's not disturbed?

Intact, undisturbed asbestos in good condition poses minimal risk. It becomes hazardous when damaged, deteriorating, or disturbed during renovation or demolition.

Do I need to vacate during abatement?

Yes. The work area must be evacuated and sealed. Depending on the scope, adjacent areas may also need to be cleared.

How long does asbestos abatement take?

Small residential projects may take 1–3 days. Large commercial or institutional projects can take several weeks. We'll provide a timeline after the initial assessment.

Can you handle asbestos abatement in federal buildings?

Yes. As an 8(a)-certified contractor, IG Services is qualified to perform abatement in federal facilities under GSA and other government contracts.
